Intersquad Game #01

STAMKOS LEADS WAY WITH FOUR POINTS
AS RED DOUBLES UP WHITE

Steven Stamkos (Unionville, ON/ Sarnia, OHL) scored twice and added two assists, and linemate Chris Doyle (Charlottetown, PE/ PEI, QMJHL) chipped in with a goal and two helpers as Team Red got the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp started on the right foot with an 8-4 win over Team White on Sunday night in Calgary.

Joe Colborne (Calgary, AB/ Camrose, AJHL) also scored twice as Team Red held intermission leads of 3-2 and 5-3 on their way to victory, outshooting Team White 31-26.

Despite coming out on the short end of the final score, it was Team White who had the quick start, scoring on the first shot of the game. Phillipe Cornet (Val d’Or, QC/ Rimouski, QMJHL) found the net behind Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/ Lewiston, QMJHL) just 42 seconds after the opening face-off, giving his team the quick 1-0 lead.

It took just five minutes for Team Red to respond, however, as Stamkos rushed the puck from end-to-end, the rebound of his shot ending up on the stick of Doyle, who beat Team White goaltender Kevin Poulin (Montreal, QC/ Victoriaville, QMJHL) to tie the game 1-1.

Tyler Cuma (Bowmanville, ON/Ottawa, OHL) gave Team Red their first lead of the game less than three minutes after Doyle’s equalizer, wristing a shot from the blue line that beat a screened Poulin.

But the lead would last just four minutes, as Michael Del Zotto (Stouffville, ON/ Oshawa, OHL) scored on a point shot of his own, beating Delmas.

A wild first period was capped off by Colborne, who scored his first of the game just eight seconds into the start of Team Red’s four-minute powerplay.

Each team received a four-minute powerplay at the end of each of the first two periods – Team Red at the end of the first period, Team White at the end of the second.

After the non-stop action of the opening 20 minutes – five goals and 23 shots – neither team could find the back of the net until the 13-minute mark of the middle frame, when Colborne beat Team White goaltender Jacob DeSerres (Calgary, AB/Seattle, WHL).

DeSerres replaced Poulin at the midway point of the second period, while Jeff Bosch (Martensville, SK/ Saskatoon Blazers, Midget AAA) spelled Delmas in the Team Red goal.

The Team Red lead was pushed to three two minutes after the Colborne goal, as Stamkos snapped a shot from the slot that beat DeSerres for a 5-2 lead. Doyle picked up his second point of the game, setting up Stamkos for the goal.

Team White pulled one back on their four-minute powerplay late in the second period, with Kyle St. Denis (Trail, BC/ Vernon, BCHL) spinning in the slot and beating Bosch along the ice.

Stamkos restored the lead to three early in the third period, finishing off a give-and-go with Doyle, before James Wright (Saskatoon, SK/ Vancouver, WHL) got one back eight minutes later, the final goal for Team White.

With the game in hand, Lance Bouma (Provost, AB/ Vancouver, WHL) and Jordan Eberle (Calgary, AB/ Regina, WHL) scored in the final five minutes, providing the final margin of victory for Team Red.

The Team Red goaltenders combined to stop 22 of 26 shots, with Delmas making 12 saves and Bosch 10, while Team White netminders Poulin (15 saves) and DeSerres (eight) turned aside 23 of 31 in a losing cause.

Game two of the three-game set goes Monday night at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. The puck drops at 6:00 p.m. MT.
