2002-03 National Men's Under-18 Team

August 13, 2002
Piestany, Slovakia

After an impressive 9-1 win over Slovakia on Monday, Canada's National Under 18 Team duplicated that feat Tuesday with another 9-1 victory, this time over Finland. The win improved Canada's record at the Eight Nations Tournament to 2-0.

Canada opened the scoring at the 14:46 mark of the first period as Nathan Horton (Oshawa, OHL/Dunnville, ON) beat Finnish goaltender Joonas Hallikainen. Jamie Tardif (Peterborough, OHL/Welland, ON) and Braydon Coburn (Portland, WHL/Shaunavon, SK) each added a goal to give Canada a 3-0 lead heading into the second period.

Despite allowing Finland a powerplay goal in the second period, Canada maintained a comfortable lead, scoring two more goals. Colin Fraser (Red Deer, WHL/Surrey, BC) notched his first goal of the tournament while Corey Perry (London, OHL/Peterborough, ON) added his second of the tournament.

In the third period, Canada put four more pucks past Hallikainen, giving Canada the 9-1 victory. Horton and Fraser both added their second goals of the game while Alexandre Picard (Halifax, QMJHL/Gatineau, QC) and Stefan Meyer (Medicine Hat, WHL/Fox Valley, SK) both scored their first goals in a Team Canada uniform.

Medicine Hat Tiger goaltender Kevin Nastiuk (Edmonton, AB) made 31 saves between the pipes, earning his first victory of the tournament.

Canada's powerplay was potent once again as they went 4 for 9 with the man advantage. In the first two games of the tournament, Canada is a combined 9 for 20 on the powerplay.

Canada's next game is Thursday when they face-off against Switzerland at 3:00pm (9:00am ET) in Piestany, Slovakia.
