GERMANY BEATS CANADA 3-2 IN DEUTSCHLAND CUP OPENER FOR BOTH TEAMS

MUNICH, Germany – Germany scored two power-play goals and defeated Canada 3-2 on Friday in the opening game for both teams at the Deutschland Cup.

Nigel Dawes made it a one-goal game by scoring a power-play goal with 1:38 left in regulation but Canada couldn't get the equalizer.

“The last 10 minutes the guys battled hard, we had a couple of opportunities but didn't capitalize on them like they did,” said head coach Rich Chernomaz. “Hopefully we'll be a bit better tomorrow.”

Germany took a 1-0 lead on a second-period power play when it caught Canada on a bad line change, with Marcus Kink tipping Benedikt Kohl's point shot past Canadian goaltender Sebastien Caron on a 5-on-3.

Germany scored another power-play goal in the third period to go up 2-0. While on a 3-on-2 Michael Wolf set up defenceman Frank Hordler, whose quick release surprised Caron.

Canada broke Rob Zepp's shutout bid as defenceman Mark Katic put in a rebound past the Canadian-born German goaltender.

The Germans went up 3-1 when Nikolai Goc hammered a shot from the point past Caron.

Switzerland edged Slovakia 3-2 in the other round-robin game.

Canada will play Slovakia on Saturday. The Canadian team roster is comprised of players in European pro leagues.

There is no playoff format at the tournament. The team with the highest point total at the end of the round robin will win the title.
