Hannover, Germany - Team Canada lost its opening game of the 2003 Deutschland Cup tonight to Switzerland 5-3 despite outshooting the Swiss by a 44-25 count. The game was tied 1-1 midway through the first period as the teams traded powerplay goals. With less than 7 minutes left in the first period the Swiss took the lead on a fluke goal that bounced off the back boards and hit goaltender Ian Gordon in the back of the leg and went behind him for the goal.

The Swiss took a 2 goal lead 12 seconds after killing the two man advantage. Canada fought back hard with 2 third period goals but the Swiss added one of their own for a 5-3 final.
