POWELL RIVER REGALS RETURN HOME AFTER CAPTURING 2ND PLACE AT 2001 NAGANO CUP
CALGARY, AB - The Powell River Regals returned to Canada late Monday night after claiming 2nd place at the 2001 Nagano Cup.
The Regals won 3-2 in a shootout over Japan's National Team on
Friday, February 9, 2001 as Trent Kaese scored the deciding goal, while goaltender Chad Vizutti stopped all three shots he faced. Mike Sullivan and Jim Inkster also scored as the 2000 Allan Cup Champs defeated Japan, a team which will be participating in the IIHF World Hockey Championship in May, 2001. » more
CANADA LOSES 6-5 TO POLAND
Canada finished the Nagano Cup tournament with a 1-1-0 record. The CHA awaits the official final standings of the tournament.
The Powell River Regals lost their first international match, a 3-1 exhibition loss to Team Japan. The score was 1-1 after the first and remained deadlocked until five minutes into the third stanza. Japan then scored another with about ten minutes left to seal Team Canada's fate.
Canada next plays Team Poland on Saturday.
Two-time Allan Cup Champions, the Powell River (B.C.) Regals will be representing Canada in an International competition in January, 2001 at the Nagano (Japan) Cup, the Canadian Hockey Association announced Wednesday.
Canada's National Men's Team, which was once run as a full-time program from 1963-68 and 1983-2000, is currently operating on a ëpart-time basis'. Canada will participate Internationally in five major competitions in Europe during the season: The Deutschland Cup, Spengler Cup, Sweden Games, Nagano Cup and finally the IIHF Men's World Championship. Canada will put together separate rosters for these competitions using Canadian players that are playing overseas, or are otherwise available to play.
