CANADA GOES UNDEFEATED IN EXHIBITION PLAY
Team Canada is off to an impressive start. With two impressive exhibition game victories under its belt, Canada heads to Grand Forks on Thursday and opens the World Junior Championship on Saturday, Christmas Day, against Slovakia.
Canada beat Switzerland 5-0 on Wednesday in front of another sell-out Winnipeg crowd at the MTS Centre.
Jeff Carter opened the scoring in the first period on a fine individual effort, beating a Swiss defenceman and sliding the puck under Swiss netminder Leonardo Genoni at 4:09. Canada’s powerplay led to the 2-0 goal. Cam Barker fed Dion Phaneuf who sent a bullet past Genoni’s glove hand.
The second period was all Canada, as the Red and White added three markers. Patrice Bergeron got things off to a flying start at 0:57 than Carter added his second at 12:03. Bergeron, with his second, finished off a splendid displaying of passing during a Canada powerplay at 19:21.
Réjean Beauchemin gets the shutout and the win, with 14 saves. Canada opens the 2005 World Junior Hockey Championship on Saturday against Slovakia at 3:30pm (Eastern).
