CALGARY, Alta. – Team Canada’s roster for the 2016 IIHF World Championship has increased to 21 players, with the additions of Corey Perry (Peterborough, Ont./Anaheim, NHL), Matt Dumba (Calgary/Minnesota, NHL), and Derick Brassard (Hull, Que./New York Rangers, NHL).

All three players have earned medals while representing Canada in past international competition. Perry is a two-time Olympic gold-medallist and Stanley Cup champion who also played on the 2005 golden National Junior Team. Both Dumba and Brassard wore the red-and-white at the IIHF U18 World Championship, with Dumba bringing home bronze with the 2012 team, and Brassard earning a silver medal in 2005.

“Fans know these three players well for their success in the NHL, but it’s important to remember all three also bring international experience that will serve our team well as we begin our quest to defend gold,” said Bill Peters, head coach, Canada’s National Men’s Team.

Team coaches and staff have arrived in Prague, Czech Republic, to prepare for the pre-competition camp that kicks off on Friday following player arrivals. The camp will include an exhibition game against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, May 3.

Joining Team Canada as part of the practice squad during the pre-competition camp is Curtis Hamilton (Kelowna, B.C.), who just wrapped up his season with HC Sparta Praha in the Czech Republic. Hamilton, who earned silver with Team Canada at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship, last donned the red-and-white jersey as part of the Spengler Cup team in 2014.

Hockey Canada has also announced the addition of Sean Burke (Windsor, Ont.) to its staff as director of player development.

Canada opens the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, against the United States on Friday, May 6, with preliminary-round games scheduled through Tuesday, May 17. The bronze- and gold-medal games will be hosted in Moscow on Sunday, May 22.

TSN, Hockey Canada’s official broadcast partner, will carry all 64 games of the 2016 IIHF World Championship, including all Team Canada games.

Team Canada went undefeated at the 2015 IIHF World Championship in Prague and Ostrava, Czech Republic, on its way to its first gold medal in eight years. Since 1931, Canada has won the world championship 19 times – not counting the years when Olympic Winter Games gold-medallists were also considered world champions. The country has also collected 11 silver medals and six bronze in that timespan.
