TOP REGULAR SEASON TEAM – WESTERN KINGS
For the first time in recent memory the Newfoundland & Labrador Major Midget Hockey League’s regular season champion did not come from St. John’s; the Kings ended the dominance of teams from the provincial capital by finishing tied with the St. John’s Privateers, taking first place thanks to more wins (19 to 17). Western was led by its offence, racking up a league-leading 138 goals in 24 games, close to a goal per game more than the Privateers. The Kings’ offensive prowess was highlighted by the six players in the top nine of NLMMHL scoring, led by Ian Skinner and David Budgell, who finished tied for first with 41 points, although Skinner claimed the scoring title thanks to his 21 goals, compared to 18 for Budgell. Daniel McCarthy saw the majority of the minutes in the Western goal, posting the NLMMHL’s third-best goals-against average among netminders who played at least five full games, at 3.42, while leading the league in wins (13) and minutes played (946).
