Canada’s National Women’s Team claims silver medal at 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship
OTTAWA, Ont. – Canada’s National Women’s Team claimed the silver medal at the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, falling to the United States 3-2 on Tuesday night at SBP Arena in Ottawa.
It is the fifth time Canada has claimed silver at the IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship, in addition to 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2011. Canada has won the gold medal 10 times, including 1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2012. Canada and the United States have met in all 15 world championship gold medal games since the tournament’s inception.
Following Tuesday’s gold medal game, Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Boston University, HE) was named best forward of the 2013 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship by the IIHF directorate. The directorate also named her one of Canada’s best three players, along with Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Catherine Ward (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL). Poulin and Ward were also named to the media all-star team, along with Meaghan Mikkelson (Edmonton, Alta./Alberta, CWHL) and Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Toronto, CWHL).
In Tuesday’s gold medal game, Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) opened the scoring for Canada at 9:50 of the first period before Brianne Decker tied it for the U.S. early in the second. Megan Bozek gave the Americans their first lead at 14:26 of the middle frame, scoring with a two-man advantage, but Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL) tied it for Canada on a power play at 17:50 to make it 2-2 going into the second intermission. Amanda Kessel scored the game-winner for the United States at 3:09 of the third for the 3-2 final.
Canada finished first in Group A during the preliminary round with a 3-0 record, defeating the U.S. 3-2 in a shootout Tuesday, Switzerland 13-0 on Wednesday and Finland 8-0 on Friday. In Monday’s semifinal, Canada beat Russia 8-1.
