TOP REGULAR SEASON TEAM – CAPE BRETON WEST ISLANDERS
Goals, goals and more goals. The Cape Breton West Islanders used a high-powered offence to lift them to a NSMMHL regular-season title, scoring 202 times in 38 games to move from sixth place in 2015-16 to the top of the standings this season. The Islanders came flying out of the gate to open their schedule; they started the season with 12 consecutive wins, and found the back of the net 51 times in their first six games. Surprisingly, though, Cape Breton West had only a single player in the top 10 of NSMMHL scoring – Avery Warner was sixth with 54 points. In total, 10 different players reached the 30-point mark, and nine recorded double-digits in goals. The Islanders also led the way defensively, allowing only 86 goals (for a +116 goal differential); Colten Ellis topped the league with a 2.05 goals-against average, while Ewan MacDonald was No. 2 in GAA at 2.24, and posted a league-leading 16 wins and four shutouts.
