COBOURG, Ont. – Canadian families across the country are dusting off their skates and equipment to get ready for a new hockey season, while in Cobourg, folks are gearing up to welcome the 2017 RBC Cup to the Cobourg Community Centre, May 13-21, 2017.

Representatives from the Town of Cobourg stood alongside members of the Cobourg Cougars and the 2017 RBC Cup host committee to provide an update on the upcoming event, using the opportunity to announce the official tournament schedule as well as ticket sales and a call for volunteers.

“The Cobourg Cougars Junior A Hockey Club is excited to be hosting the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg,” said Marc Mercier, 2017 RBC Cup host committee chair. “While a great deal of hard work by our volunteer committee has already been undertaken, there is still a lot of work to be done. As a longstanding member of the community, the goal of the club is to once again showcase the Town of Cobourg and, indeed, the entire County of Northumberland on the national stage.

“We are confident the entire community will rally around us in support of this event and will want to be a part of it – whether as a volunteer, sponsor, or hockey fan purchasing tickets – and we thank all of those involved in helping us earn the confidence of Hockey Canada, the Ontario Junior Hockey League, and the Ontario Hockey Association to bring this marquee event to Cobourg.”

The RBC Cup, Canada’s National Junior A Championship, kicks off May 13 with two games on the schedule, including the Cougars taking to the ice at 7:30 p.m. ET.

The 2017 RBC Cup will bring together four regional representatives (Central, East, West #1, West #2), along with the host Cougars, to face off for the national championship. Historically, the event has generated more than $2 million in local economic impact, with event proceeds being directed to supporting hockey development in the community.

“The Cobourg Cougars are looking forward to the opportunity to compete to win this prestigious national title,” said Brent Tully, general manager of the Cobourg Cougars. “The coaching staff have been working hard to put together the best team possible for the community to cheer on throughout the season, on the road to the RBC Cup.”

Volunteer opportunities available

The successful execution of any event requires the assistance of volunteers, and the 2017 RBC Cup host committee is now recruiting volunteers to assist in a number of areas, including: security, team services, and transportation, to name a few. Local ambassadors are also being sought to volunteer as team hosts – a position that includes being assigned to a visiting team over the course of the event. Interested candidates for this and other volunteer positions can register online or pick up a registration form at the Cobourg Community Centre.

Full-event ticket packages can be purchased online beginning Monday, Sept. 12, for $225.

The championship game will be broadcast on TSN and RDS, official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, on Sunday, May 21. Please check your local listings for broadcast times in your area.
