They’ve got all the volunteers they need.

On the evening of Jan. 24, Humboldtonians who hadn’t already signed up to be a part of the 2012 RBC Cup, coming up in May, seized the opportunity at the RBC Cup Volunteer Blitz.

The volunteer blitz was held by the RBC Cup’s organizing committee to try and recruit more volunteers for the National Junior A Championship that the Humboldt Broncos are hosting at the Elgar Petersen Arena, May 5-12.

“It was a huge success,” said Susan Saunders, who has been heading up the volunteer committee for the event. “Right now, we’ve got the number of volunteers that we need to be able to operate efficiently.”

The meeting room had been set up with three separate stations that allowed prospective volunteers to make all the necessary steps in one go, from online registration, to criminal record checks, to ID processing.

The last station was a clothes rack with sample sizes of the shirts and jackets that volunteers will be required to wear during the event.

“We had 150 people signed up before the blitz,” Saunders said, “and we now have over 250. I also had more students from Lake Lenore phone in who couldn’t come to the blitz night but who want to volunteer.”

Now that the numbers on the volunteer list are up, Saunders and other members of the organizing committee are working on the timeline to establish a training session prior to the event. That date is tentatively set for April 28, one week before the event opens.

“Volunteers will be contacted by the head of whatever committee they have signed up for and notified about it,” she explained. “That’s when we’ll be handing out the uniforms and giving each volunteer a “training package.”

It is a relief to everyone involved with the organization for the event to see such a turnout and to see their numbers of volunteers bumped up. However, Saunders stipulates that anybody else that wants to, can still volunteer.

“We won’t turn anybody away,” she added. “People can register online and go to the RCMP for their criminal check.”
