CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Pembina Valley Hawks (West) have won the 2012 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship, defeating the Thunder Bay Queens (Ontario) 4-2 in the gold medal game Saturday night at the CARI Complex.
It was a first appearance at the Esso Cup for the Pembina Valley Hawks, while the Thunder Bay Queens won the gold medal at the 2010 Esso Cup in Regina, Sask.
The Hawks were led by Brittni Mowat (Glenboro, Man.), who made 35 saves in the final game, Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Man.), who scored twice and added an assist Lauryn Keen (Manitou, Man.), who scored once and had two assists and captain Madison Hutchinson (Manitou, Man.), who recorded two assists.
Pembina Valley finished second in the 2012 Esso Cup preliminary round with three regulation wins, one shootout win and one regulation loss, a 5-4 defeat to Thunder Bay. The Hawks topped Edmonton 2-1 in semifinal action en route to the gold medal game. Thunder Bay had a perfect 5-0 record in the preliminary round and beating Halifax 4-2 in semifinals to make it to the gold medal match-up.
Earlier Saturday, the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific) won their third consecutive Esso Cup medal, defeating Halifax Metro Boston Pizza (Atlantic) 4-1 to capture the bronze. Edmonton won bronze in 2010, and silver last season. Brett Campbell (Edmonton, Alta.) scored two goals and had an assist in the third en route to the win.
This marks the fourth annual National Female Midget Championship, with the Westman Wildcats (West) winning the inaugural event in Calgary, Alta., in 2009 and the Notre Dame Hounds (West) winning the 2011 Esso Cup in St. Albert, Alta. The 2013 Esso Cup will be held in Burnaby, BC.
