HAMAR, Norway – Canada’s National Sledge Team has won the bronze medal at the 2012 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, defeating the Czech Republic 2-0 in Sunday’s third-place game at the Olympic Amphitheatre.

It’s the third time Canada has won bronze at the world championship, joining third-place finishes in 19. The Canadians are two-time gold medallists (20), and finished fourth in 2004.

On Sunday, Canadian captain Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) opened the scoring midway through the first period and set up Brad Bowden (Orton, Ont.) for the insurance goal midway through the second to help Canada to the victory. Benoit St-Amand (St-Hubert, Que.) needed to make just eight saves for his first shutout of the tournament as the Canadians outshot the Czechs 23-8.

“Obviously this wasn’t the colour of medal we came for, but I am proud of the way our team competed today,” said Mike Mondin, head coach of Canada’s National Sledge Team. “Bronze medal games are never easy, but I thought we rebounded well after the tough loss to the U.S. in the semifinals.”

In Sunday’s gold medal game, the United States claimed its second consecutive world championship with a 5-1 win over Korea.
