Two-Time Olympic Gold Medallist Meghan Agosta Goes No. 1 Seven National Women's Team Alumnae Selected at 2011 CWHL Draft

Canada’s National Women’s Team member Meghan Agosta, the most valuable player at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, was the first-overall selection at Thursday’s 2011 CWHL Draft.

The Ruthven, Ont., native will play for Montreal, one of six teams in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League, which held its second annual draft in Mississauga, Ont.

Six other past and present members of Canada’s National Women’s Team were also selected in the draft, and were all in the top 10 of the 112 players picked by Brampton, Boston, Burlington, Montreal, Toronto and Alberta, the league’s new addition for the 2011-12 season. Those include Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alta.) in the No. 3 spot and Catherine Ward (Montreal, Que.) at No. 7, who both won a gold medal with Agosta at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, B.C.

No. 3 – Meaghan Mikkelson (selected by Calgary, has been a NWT member since 2007)
No. 4 – Vicki Bendus (selected by Brampton, has been a NWT member since 2010)
No. 6 – Courtney Birchard (selected by Brampton, has been a NWT member since 2010)
No. 7 – Catherine Ward (selected by Montreal, has been an NWT member since 2007)
No. 9 – Bobbi-Jo Slusar (selected by Calgary, has been an NWT member since 2006)
No. 10 – Sommer West (selected by Burlington, played for the NWT from 1998-2007)

In addition, 14 past members of Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team were also selected in the top 80 draft picks, including Jesse Scanzano (Montreal, Que.), who won a gold medal at the 2010 MLP Cup in Germany, as the No. 5 pick, and Mallory Deluce (London, Ont.), who won gold medals at both the 2010 MLP Cup and the 2011 MLP Cup in Switzerland, in the No. 11 spot.
