SAGUENAY, Que. – For the sixth time in seven tournaments, Ontario Red and Quebec will play for the gold medal at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship after posting semifinal wins on Friday at the Centre Georges-Vézina in Saguenay.
Sunday’s gold medal game can be seen live on TSN2/RDS, the official broadcasters of Hockey Canada, beginning at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT (check your local listings).
Ontario Red has won the gold medal at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship six consecutive times (2001, January 2005, November 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009), beating Quebec in the gold medal game in the first five of those years.
In Saturday’s early semifinal, Ontario Red got a hat trick from Jaimie McDonell (East York, Ont.) in a 5-1 win over Team Atlantic, sending it to its seventh gold medal game. Hilary Lloyd (Toronto, Ont.) and Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) also scored for Ontario Red, which held Team Atlantic to just 11 shots in goal in winning its 34th game in 35 tries, dating back to the 2001 event.
In the late game, Ann-Renee Desbiens (La Malbaie, Que.) made 47 saves to backstop Quebec to a 6-1 win over Manitoba and a return to the gold medal game after missing out in 2009. Catherine Dubois (Quebec City, Que.) had two goals to lead the Quebec offence, while Mélodie Bouchard (Sept-Îles, Que.), Camille Pauck-Therrien (Boucherville, Que.), Alexandra Labelle (St-Louis-de-Gonzague, Que.) and Vickie Lemire (St-Lazare, Que.) also scored.
Ontario Red and Quebec finished atop their respective groups during preliminary round play. Ontario Red scored wins over Manitoba (8-2), British Columbia (4-1) and Alberta (1-0) to claim top spot in Group A, while Quebec beat Ontario Blue (4-1), Team Atlantic (2-1) and Saskatchewan (6-3) to take first place in Group B.
Team Atlantic and Manitoba will meet Sunday afternoon (noon ET/9 a.m. PT) in the bronze medal game.
Earlier Saturday, British Columbia beat Ontario Blue 5-0 to claim fifth place, while Alberta topped Saskatchewan 3-0 in the seventh-place game.
