2011 Esso Cup, Canada's National Female Midget Championship, Set to Start in St. Albert, Alta.

ST. ALBERT, Alta. – The top female Midget teams from across the country will be in St. Albert starting Sunday to compete for the 2011 Esso Cup, Canada’s National Female Midget Championship. The third annual championship runs from April 17-23 at Servus Place, home of the host St. Albert Slash of the Alberta Major Midget Female Hockey League.

The Slash will be joined by five regional champions: the Edmonton Thunder (Pacific), Kings County Kings (Atlantic), Kodiaks du Lac St-Louis (Quebec), Notre Dame Hounds (West) and Toronto Aeros (Ontario).

FThe Thunder is the only team to return to the Esso Cup for a third straight year, after claiming the bronze medal in 2010 and finishing fourth in 2009. The Notre Dame Hounds are making their second consecutive appearance at the Esso Cup, after settling for silver last year.

This year’s gold medal game, which starts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, will air on TSN/RDS on Saturday, April 23. Check your local listings for broadcast times All other games, including the round robin, semifinals and bronze medal game, will be available online through FASTHockey at for $7 per game.

Esso Cup action kicks off Sunday, with the Kings County Kings taking on the Kodiaks du Lac St-Louis at 12 p.m. MT, the Edmonton Thunder facing off against the Notre Dame Hounds at 4 p.m. MT and the St. Albert Slash meeting the Toronto Aeros at 8 p.m. MT. The five-day round robin will be followed by two semifinals, which will determine who will play in the bronze and gold medal games.

Hockey Canada, in partnership with Hockey Alberta and the St. Albert Minor Hockey Association, is also holding several development activities for female hockey players in conjunction with the 2011 Esso Cup, including two Esso Fun Days, the McDonald’s In The Line Up program, intermission mini-games, Esso puck drops and Experience a Dream, which will give female minor hockey players the chance to join a participating 2011 Esso Cup team for both off- and on-ice warmups.
