SURREY, B.C. – For the first time ever, two Ontario teams will meet in the gold medal final of the National Women’s Under-18 Championship.
The gold medal game will be shown live from South Surrey Arena in Surrey, B.C. on Hockey Canada’s official broadcaster TSN2 at 3:30 p.m. PT. Please check your local listings.
Ontario Red has won the National Women’s Under-18 Championship five straight times, while Ontario Blue has never made it to the final game of the tournament. Prior to this year, Ontario Red and Quebec have faced off in every National Women’s Under-18 Championship since its inception in 1993 (the event has been held in 1993, 1997, 2001, twice in 2005, 20).
Ontario Blue reached Sunday’s final in an exciting shootout, following a scoreless ten-minute overtime period. Kristen Richards (Toronto, Ont.) scored the only goal of the night to secure a 1-0 win for the team. Kristy Garrow (London, Ont.) was the goaltender for Ontario Blue during the shootout, while teammate Danielle Butters (London, Ont.) was in nets for all three periods of regulation play and overtime.
In the first semi-final, Ontario Red edged Manitoba 4-3 in a hard fought game. Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont.) secured Ontario Red’s first goal of the night with less than five minutes into the first and Shannon Doyle (Baldwin, Ont.) followed suit with a power-play goal, putting Ontario Red up 2-0 before the period was done.
Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ont.) scored on another power-play for Ontario Red, while Sally Butler (Etobicoke, Ont.) made it 4-0 for her team by the end of the second period. Manitoba made a brief comeback in the third with Meghan Dufault (Winnipeg, Man.) scoring two and Meagan Vestby (Swan River, Man.) contributing a single but even with the goalie pulled they couldn’t even up the score.
Manitoba and Quebec will play for bronze at 11:30 a.m. PT.
Two consolation games were also held on Saturday. In the fifth-place game, Alberta beat Team Atlantic 4-2. Saskatchewan defeated British Columbia 4-2 to take seventh place.
