CALGARY, Alta. – Canada’s National Sledge Team defeated Japan 2-0 on Saturday to claim the bronze medal at the 2009 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

Todd Nicholson (Kinburn, Ont.) opened the scoring early in the first period, his goal standing up as the game-winner for Canada. Graeme Murray (Gravenhurst, Ont.) gave the Canadians some insurance, scoring just shy of the midway point of the second period. Paul Rosen (Thornhill, Ont.) stopped all 10 shots he faced for the shutout. Canada allowed just one regulation-time goal in five tournament games.

Canada was the defending champion at the IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship, but fell 2-1 to the United States in Thursday’s semifinal, sending it to the bronze medal game.

In Saturday’s gold medal game, the United States defeated Norway 1-0.
