BERN, Switzerland – Canada’s National Men’s Team has won the silver medal at the 2009 IIHF World Championship, falling 2-1 to Russia in Sunday’s gold medal game. The silver marks Canada’s fifth medal in the last six years, with five appearances in the gold medal game over that time, capturing three gold medals and two silver medals.

On Sunday, Jason Spezza (Mississauga, Ont./Ottawa, NHL) opened the scoring just 5:37 after the opening face-off, but that would be the only puck Canada would get past Russian netminder Ilya Bryzgalov. The Canadians outshot Russia 38-17, including 27-9 over the final 40 minutes, but could not get the equalizer.

Canada’s Shea Weber (Sicamous, B.C./Nashville, NHL) was named Top Defenceman by the IIHF Directorate, while Weber, Martin St. Louis (Laval, Que./Tampa Bay, NHL) and Steven Stamkos (Unionville, Ont./Tampa Bay, NHL) were named to the tournament all-star team, as voted upon by the media.

Russia’s Ilya Kovalchuk took home Top Forward and Most Valuable Player honours, while Belarus’ Andrei Mezin was named Top Goaltender. Kovalchuk, Mezin and defenceman Kenny Jonsson of Sweden joined the three Canadians on the all-star team.

Canada’s world championship management group has worked closely with Canada’s 2010 Olympic management group, led by executive director Steve Yzerman, to assemble this team and use this as an additional opportunity to prepare for the 2009-10 season, which will include the 2010 Olympic Winter Games. All of Canada’s games at the 2009 TSN/RDS were broadcast live across Canada.
