Canada Advances to Semifinals at 2009 IIHF World Championship; Will Face Sweden on May 8

BERN, Switzerland – Canada has advanced to the semifinals at the 2009 IIHF World Championship.

Canada moved into the semifinals on Thursday evening with a 4-2 win over Latvia. It marks the seventh consecutive year that Canada has taken part in the world championship semifinals. Canada will take on Sweden on Friday, May 8 at 8:15 p.m. local/2:15 p.m. ET. The other semifinal will see Russia taking on the United States.

Dany Heatley, Dan Hamhuis, Steven Stamkos and Matthew Lombardi scored the goals for Canada in the win over Latvia. Stamkos and Hamhuis added assists for two-point games. The game was scoreless after 20 minutes and Canada led 3-1 after two periods. 8:15 p.m. local / 2:15 p.m. ET Canada vs. Sweden

Sunday, May 10

4:15 p.m. local / 10:15 a.m. ET Bronze medal game

8:15 p.m. local / 2:15 p.m. ET Gold medal game

Canada’s world championship management group has worked closely with Canada’s 2010 Olympic management group, led by executive director Steve Yzerman, to assemble this team and using this as an additional opportunity to prepare for the 2009-10 season, which will include the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.
