RAVENSBURG, GERMANY – Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team has won the silver medal at the 2009 MLP Cup after falling 2-1 to Sweden in the gold medal game on Tuesday.

Canada has won the tournament (formerly known as the Air Canada Cup) in six of the seven years of its existence, winning 21 of 23 games all-time.

Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) scored her tournament-leading fourth goal early in the second period of Tuesday’s gold medal game to opening the scoring. Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) and Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, QC/Dawson College, Collégial AA) had assists on Agosta’s goal.

Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON/Cornell University, ECAC), playing in the tournament for the third time, led the offensively, tying for the tournament lead in scoring with seven points (three goals, four assists). Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, ON/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) also finished in the top five with six points (two goals, four assists). In total, 18 of Canada’s 20 skaters recorded at least one point.

Canada outscored its opponents 18-2 in its four tournament games, with both goals against coming in Tuesday’s loss to Sweden.
