What's Going on at The Esso Women's Nationals
March 7, 2008

Hockey Canada’s Breakfast of Champions is teaming up with the not-for-profit organization Breakfast for Leaning and General Mills in order to support children’s nutrition in local schools during the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals.

The teams competing for the senior women’s national championship will be visiting St. Jean and Prince Street Elementary Schools on Tuesday March 11th, while the teams competing for the national women’s club team championship will visit Queen Charlotte Intermediate, Stonepark Intermediate and Birchwood Junior High on March 13th. Each team will arrive equipped with breakfast products from Hockey Canada’s international marketing partner General Mills to share an early morning meal with the students.

The opening ceremonies of the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals on March 12th are set to take place at Charlottetown’s historic Seaport Centre, a state-of-the-art marine terminal that was once used as a potato factory. The Seaport Centre is the main island port for visiting cruise ships and other commercial vessels.

Those attending the opening ceremonies will have the opportunity to experience a taste of Prince Edward Island, as they will be served a menu featuring island seafood, potato martinis, raspberry cordial and a variety of other treats native to PEI.

In September 2007, Emma MacEachern laced up her skates and stepped on the ice for the first time in a year, 12 months after a tumor was found in her cervical spine.

The simple feat of going for a skate was the end of a year-long road for the Colonel Gray High School student, one that included a high-risk six-hour surgery, months of hospitalization, four months of physical and occupational rehab on Prince Edward Island and three-and-a-half months at the Lyndhurst Spinal Cord Rehabilitation Centre in Toronto.

An avid athlete and dedicated hockey fan, Emma is determined to remain a part of the game she loves, and those attending the Esso Women’s National banquet on March 14th at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel will have the opportunity to hear her speak about her challenges and achievements.

Just how did the 2008 Esso Women’s Nationals end up in Charlottetown? A big reason was SCORE! – Sport Charlottetown Opportunities Resource Expertise. Developed by the City of Charlottetown and the Events Development Office, the program assists provincial and local sporting organizations to attract events to Charlottetown by providing resources and expertise.

SCORE! promotes its available resources to local and provincial sport organizations, while also taking on the role of promoting the City of Charlottetown to national and international sport organizations as an event destination.
