Dauphin (Manitoba) – A sold-out crowd, announced at 2000, showed up at the Dauphin Credit Union Place on Thursday, and was treated to a 6-0 Team Canada win over the Parkland Midget AAA Rangers, of the Manitoba Midget AAA Hockey League. Canada got goals from six different players en route to a convincing win.

After taking over a period to score against Central Plains on Tuesday, there was no holding back Team Canada on this night. Immediately following the opening faceoff, Katie Weatherston (Thunder Bay, ON/ Dartmouth College, ECAC) stormed into the Parkland end, started to circle the net, centering the puck to Danielle Goyette (St-Nazaire, QC/ Calgary, NWHL) who cashed in from the slot. Seven seconds into the game, Canada had a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/ McGill, CIS) was called upon to make a great save, as Brett Ewanshyn got the pass alone in the slot a fired a quick wrist shot, that Labonté managed to get a shoulder on.

At 3:21, Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/ Calgary, NWHL) redirected a point shot by defenceman Cathy Chartrand (Lac Nominingue, QC/ Montreal, NWHL) to give Canada a 2-0 lead. Canada couldn’t cash in on a two-player advantage in the opening period, but less than a minute afterwards Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/ Mercyhurst College, CHA) put her own rebound past Parkland goaltender Josh Hohn to give Canada a three-goal lead. Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/ Brampton, NWHL) added a fourth goal for Canada at the 19:53 mark of the opening period, as Canada headed to the dressing room with a 4-0 lead. Canada also had a 13-7 edge on the shot clock.

Kingsbury added another point in the middle frame, an assist, setting up Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/ Minnesota, WWHL) on a two-on-one break at 3:30 as Canada made it 5-0. That’s how it remained through forty minutes of play with Canada.

Team Canada’s only World Championship rookie Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, ON/ Ohio State, WCHA) tallied Canada’s sixth goal at 0:42 of the final period, with a slapshot from the point that Deven Dubyk couldn’t handle. Dubyk took over for Hohn midway through the second period and held Canada scoreless for 10:55 before allowing the Bonhomme goal.

Charline Labonté made 26 saves for the shutout, and the win for Canada. Canada directed 41 shots at Parkland’s goaltenders.

Canada’s next and final pre-World Championship opponent will be Finland, the World’s fourth ranked women’s hockey nation. The Canada-Finland match-up will take place in Selkirk (MB) on Saturday, March 31st. The team than moves to Winnipeg for the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship, opening up on April 3rd against Switzerland.
