February 16, 2007

The 2007 IIHF World Women's Hockey Championship (WWHC) announced today that it’s popular event mini pack, the ‘All Canadian Six Pack’, which includes seats to all four Team Canada games plus the two medal games, is now on sale to the general public in the lower bowl of the MTS Centre.

“The public demand has been overwhelming to date with requests for this package to go on sale in the lower bowl,” stated WWHC Event Chair Polly Craik. “We have sold over 1200 All CDN packages in the upper deck prior to this, and are expecting an even stronger response with the lower bowl, where we aim to double that number, further helping us hit the record attendance we are hoping for.”

Also unveiled today, were the World Championship pageantry banners that will soon decorate Winnipeg and Selkirk on major routes and landmarks. “The first banner represents the action we are all looking forward to seeing on the ice with the athletes from the world’s nine best teams, while the second represents the passion and excitement we want the fans to bring when cheering on Team Canada in the stands,” stated Craik.

Cassie Campbell, one of the most decorated players in Canadian hockey history was also on hand for today’s announcements, helping launch a new World Championship contest with local grass roots teams. Campbell challenged all Manitoba hockey teams to come and cheer on Team Canada at the World Championships, whether it be a group outing or team wind up, where all hockey teams that attend a game will be entered to win dinner with her, and have the ability to watch the game from upgraded VIP box seats! Teams can phone 926-5720 or 926-5722 for more information on taking part. Campbell, is a six time World Championship gold medalist, two time Olympic gold medalist, and is also the only player to ever Captain two Olympic Gold Medal winning teams for Canada.

Further World Championship developmental activities also announced today, with details on the attached flyer. For further information or registration with any of the developmental activities, public can call 925-5762.

The hosting of the 2007 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Winnipeg and Selkirk, MB, will mark the fifth time that this international event has been staged in Canada and the first time it will be held in Manitoba.

Canada also hosted the IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship in 2004 (Halifax, NS), in 2000 (Mississauga, ON), in 1997 (Kitchener, ON), and in 1990 (Ottawa, ON). In 2006, there is no IIHF World Championship for women’s hockey in lieu of the Olympic Winter Games. Canada has won a gold medal at eight of the nine IIHF World Women’s Championships, the exception being a silver medal at the 2005 IIHF World Women’s Championship in Linkoping, Sweden, after losing to the USA in a shoot out.
