MOSCOW, RUSSIA – Canada will face Switzerland in the 2007 IIHF World Championship quarter-finals on May 10th, after finishing first in its pool in the Qualifying Round. In its final game of the Qualifying Round on Monday, Canada defeated the USA 6-3 to capture first place in the group.
Matthew Lombardi (Montreal, QC/Calgary, NHL) scored three goals, one in each period, to lead Canada to the win. Canada also got two goals from Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, ON/Los Angeles, NHL) and one from Jay McClement (Kingston, ON/St. Louis, NHL). Cam Ward (Sherwood Park, AB/Carolina, NHL) earned the win in goal.
Paul Stastney scored twice for the U.S.A., and Lee Stempniak added the team’s other goal. John Graham took the loss in net.
Canada hasn’t lost to the U.S.A. at the IIHF World Championship since 2001. Monday’s win improves Canada’s record against the U.S.A. to 36-3 all-time.

The winner of the Canada/Switzerland quarter-final game will take on the winner of the Sweden/Slovakia game in the semi-finals on May 12th, at 6:15 am (ET) and at 10:15 am (ET). If Russia advances, its semi-final game will be at 6:15 am (ET), with the other semi-final games being played at 10:15 am (ET).
The 2007 IIHF World Championship will come to an end for the four teams that lose in the quarter-finals on May 9th and 10th.
Both medal games will be played on May 13th, with the bronze medal game scheduled for 6:15 am (ET) and the gold medal game at 10:15 am (ET).
