Hockey Canada partnered with the OHF and NOHA to bring a Hockey Canada Skills Camp to Moose Factory, ON for the first time on Jan. 27/28. Moose Factory is better known as the home of the Polar Bear Express and Jonathan Cheechoo of the San Jose Sharks!
As part of this camp the Hockey Hall of Fame brought the World Cup of Hockey and the Rocket Richard Trophy, which was won by Jonathan Cheechoo last year when he led the NHL with 56 goals. Over 100 players from the island and Moosonee took part in development sessions over two days at the Thomas Cheechoo Jr. Arena in Moose Factory. This camp was supported by the San Jose Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs who both provided a variety of prizes including jerseys and pictures for the players involved.
February featured two camps, the first at the new GM Centre in Oshawa hosted by Oshawa NASC. As part of this camp players got to take to the same ice as the Oshawa Generals and also received a tour of the new facility and a ticket to that night's Generals game.
Waterloo marked the next stop for the Skills Camp program. This camp marked the second time that Waterloo Minor Hockey has hosted a camp at RIM Park. Special guest coaches included former National Jr. Team assistant coach and current Kitchener Rangers Head Coach, Peter DeBoer as well as Steve Spott of the Rangers and Kelly Nobes of Laurier's Men's team.
March will mark a conclusion to the Skills Camp schedule with a busy schedule including stops in Paris, Pickering, Vaughan and St. Catharines. Be sure to check out hockeycanada.ca for updates from all of these camps.
