2006 Telus Cup

Pacific Region – In the regular season the Calgary Buffaloes finished second in the South division behind their cross-town rivals the Calgary Flames. In the post-season they needed the full 5 games to eliminate the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs in the quarter-finals but then put down the UFA Bisons in three straight in the semifinals before sweeping the Boston Pizza Rangers in the finals. The Okanagan Rockets (representing BC) went down in two games as the Buffaloes outscored them 17- 4 so they take a nine game winning streak to Charlottetown for the Telus Cup. Chris Markiewicz led the scoring race for AMHL defensemen with 34 points and Mike Connolly was their top point getter with 43 (23G/20A) in 31 games. Jacob Deserres handled the lion's share of the goaltending duties during the season and playoffs. He was ranked 44th in Canada with a 2.65 GAA and .916 save percentage.

Western Region - Though they finished second in the regular season, the Prince Albert Mintos persevered and won the SMAAAHL Championship with a three game sweep of the Saskatoon Blazers who had eliminated the Contacts in the semifinals. At the Western Regionals they held the explosive Winnipeg Thrashers to five goals in two games with a 2-2 tie to open the Tourney and a 5-3 win in the title game. Matthew Robertson, who finished first in the league with 62 points, leads the offense. On defense they have Taylor Theissen who ranked #1 in scoring for SMAAAHL defensemen with 37 points. Both players performed well at the Regionals. Robertson had 5 goals and 3 assists including 2 goals and an assist in the final 5-3 win. Theissen had 3 goals and 3 assists in the 4 games. Dustin Tokarski has been excellent between the pipes during the playoffs after finishing 8th in the country during the regular season with a 1.98 GAA and .935 save percentage.

Central Region – The Toronto Jr. Canadiens were ranked the #3 team in Canada with a record of 26-3-4 and a winning percentage of .848. They took over the lead in the GTHL the 3rd week in November and held off the North York Rangers to finish first. They appeared to struggle at times during the GTHL playoffs but ended up defeating the Rangers 8-6 in the first to 8 points finals. After finishing 3rd in the Regional round robin in North Bay, they edged the perennial powerhouse Soo North Stars 2-1 in the semifinals and downed a very good Markham Waxers team 6-1 in the finals. Both teams had previously beaten them in the tournament. Brenden Soley and Jordan Watts are hot and led the offense while Alex Galli was the highest scoring defensman in North Bay with 12 points in 8 games.

Quebec Region - The Patriotes de Chateaguay are the Jimmy Ferrari LDHMAAAQ champions for 2005-06. After finishing the regular season with a record of 29-11-1-3 they compiled an 11-2 record in the playoffs before defeating the Commandeurs de Levis 4-2 in the finals. They are backstopped by Guillaume Tartre who ranked 54th in the country with a GGA of 2.83 and a .879 save percentage but improved those numbers to 2.25 and .909 during a playoffs run of 15 wins and 4 losses. Alexandre Leduc leads the offense and was selected as the outstanding player of the post-season in Quebec after contributing 15 goals and 17 assists in 19 playoff games.

Atlantic Region - The St. John's Maple Leafs were the MidgetAAACanada.com #1 ranked team in the country. With a record of 22-1-1 and a winning percentage of .938 they ran away with the N&LMMHL to earn a berth in the Atlantic Regionals. In the Regionals they lost once in the round robin to the Dartmouth Subways but avenged that loss by handing the NSMMHL champion Subways a 2-1 loss in the finals. They have had strong goaltending all year with the duo of Kyle Downer and Evan Mosher. Downer posted great numbers as he finished #2 in the country in GAA at 1.10 and had a 0.954 save percentage. He was unable to play at the Atlantics due to illness but Mosher responded with a fine performance especially in the championship game when he turned aside 43 of 44 shots directed at him. The offense is led by Luke Adam, who led the country this year in PPG with 2.36 and Chad Locke who would have been right with him but spent a lot of time with the PEI Rocket in the "Q". The solid defense is anchored by Brad Bussey who was selected as our National Defensive Player of the Month in January by MidgetAAACanada.com.

Host – The host team for the 2006 TELUS Cup is the Charlottetown Islanders who play in the NB/PEIMMHL. They are led offensively by Nathan Desroches, who had 17 goals and 36 assists in 33 regular season games and Greg Paynter who ranked 4th in scoring at the Atlantic Regionals. Matt Boyle is the top scoring defensemen with 24 points in 33 games and ranked 10th in points in Dartmouth. Andrew MacRae and Chris Dalziel share the goaltending duties.
