PRINCE GEORGE – In exactly eight months Prince George will welcome the nation for the 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup and today the public awareness campaign for the national championship got underway with the unveiling of one of five highway billboards aimed at promoting the event. The 8’ x 8’ signs will be located along the major highways leading into Prince George and will be up through the winter leading up to the Championship in May.
“We extremely pleased to be able to place this type of sign up so far in advance of our event,” says Dan Rogers, RBC Royal Bank Cup Co-Chair. “We’ve had great cooperation from both the Ministry and from YRB which has agreed to place the signs for us.”
This initiative was made possible by a policy change within the Ministry of Transportation a few years ago, which allows communities hosting National Championships to place promotional signage along major highways.
“Our community is very excited to be hosting the RBC Royal Bank Cup,” says Shirley Bond, MLA Prince George Mt. Robson and Deputy Premier. “Promotion of this national hockey championship fits into the government’s overall direction to encourage our children to become healthier and physically active.”
The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup runs May 5-13 at CN Centre and is expected to draw hockey fans from across the country, with the final game televised live on TSN. The impact of this event for the local economy is estimated to be in excess of $1.5 million. Tickets are available online at Ticketmaster.ca or charge by phone to 614-9100.
