Oil Barons Win Rogers Wireless Cup
Bernier and Thompson Co-Recipients of Playoff MVP Award

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons have won the 2006 Rogers Wireless Cup and their third Alberta Junior Hockey League Championship. The Oil Barons captured the League title with a 3-2 double overtime win over the defending League Champion Camrose Kodiaks on Sunday night in Camrose.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons completed a comeback from a 2-0 deficit to win 3-2 in double overtime in Game 6 on Sunday night. Defenceman Mike Schreiber scored the winning goal at 19:04 of the second overtime period. Schreiber led all Oil Barons in scoring with 5 points in the series.

This was the second consecutive season that the Oil Barons and Kodiaks have advanced to the AJHL League Final. The Kodiaks won the Rogers Wireless Cup in Game 7 of the 2005 League Final. This was the third consecutive League Final appearance for the Oil Barons. The Oil Barons have advanced to the League Final eight times (1992, 1994, 1996, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2006) and previously won two AJHL Championships (1997, 2000).

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons finished the regular season on top of the AJHL earning a bye to the North Division Semi-Final. The Oil Barons began the 2006 Playoffs by defeating the Bonnyville Pontiacs in Game 7 of the Round Two Division Semi-Finals. Fort McMurray then completed a 4 game sweep of the Brooks Bandits in Round Three to advance to the League Final.

League President Kim Marsh presented the 2006 Playoff MVP Award to goaltenders Jimmy Bernier and David Thompson following the game on Sunday night. David Thompson of the Camrose Kodiaks led all goaltenders in the post-season with a 1.23 GAA and a Save Percentage of .954. Thompson is 10-6 (W-L) in the post-season and has recorded 4 shutouts, tying the League record for playoff shutouts. Oil Barons goaltender Jimmy Bernier is in 2nd place with a 1.71 GAA, a .934 Save Percentage and 12-5 record.

The Fort McMurray Oil Barons will now meet the BCHL League Champion in a best-of-seven series for the 2006 Doyle Cup (Alberta / British Columbia Championship), which will begin in Fort McMurray on Friday, April 21st. The Penticton Vees and Burnaby Express of the BCHL are currently battling for the BCHL Championship Title. The Oil Barons captured the Doyle Cup and continued on to win the RBC Royal Bank Cup in 2000.

The Doyle Cup Champion will represent the Pacific Region at the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup National Junior 'A' Championship on May 6th -14th in Brampton, Ontario.
