CALGARY, AB – Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team, the 2006 Paralympic gold medal winning team in Sledge Hockey, will launch its 2006-07 season with an Evaluation Camp on June 9-10 at the Sensplex (1565 Maple Grove Road) in Kanata, Ontario, Hockey Canada announced on Thursday. Thirty players have been selected to take part in this camp.

Canada’s coaching staff at the 2006 Paralympics, with Head Coach Jeff Snyder and assistant coaches Shawn Frydberg and Mark Gallant selected the 30 players invited to this camp and will run the ice sessions and player evaluations. The coaching and support staff for the 2006-07 season will be identified at a later date.

Three goaltenders, seven defencemen and 20 forwards will be attending this camp, including all 15 members of the gold medal winning sledge hockey team at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

Sledge hockey is the Paralympic version of hockey and, since its debut on the Paralympic program at the 1994 Lillehammer Paralympic Winter Games, it has become one of the biggest attractions for spectators at the Paralympic Winter Games. It is fast-paced, highly physical and played by male athletes with a physical disability in the lower part of the body. Canada captured its first ever sledge hockey gold medal at the 2006 Paralympic Winter Games, defeating Norway 3-0, defending World Champions, in the final game.

Following this week’s camp in Kanata, ON and two development camps in July, a final National Selection Camp will be held from August 10-13, in Ottawa, ON to determine Canada’s roster for the 2006-07 season. Canada’s National Sledge Hockey Team will be taking part in several international competitions in 2006-07, starting in October 2006. There will also be a Sledge Hockey Festival in March 2007. Details and confirmed dates and locations for the 2006-07 season schedule will be announced at a later date.
