Prince George will welcome the nation in May of 2007 as the country’s best Junior A Hockey teams battle it out in the RBC Royal Bank Cup.
“We couldn't be more thrilled,” says Bid Committee Co-Chair Don Kehler. “Not only will this event do incredible things to promote the sport of hockey in Northern BC, but it gives us the opportunity to put Prince George in the national spotlight once again.”
Prince George was vying for the hosting rights for the 2007 Royal Bank Cup along with Pictou County, Nova Scotia. In the end, Hockey Canada selected the Prince George bid.
“We understand it was a tough decision for Hockey Canada as Pictou County put together a solid package and we congratulate them for their efforts. In the end we believe that our facilities, hosting experience, and legacy plans gave us the edge,” says Dan Rogers, Bid Committee Co-Chair.
“The Bid Committee was very fortunate to work with many supporters who deserve credit for their contribution to the bid. Most importantly, we want to thank the people of Prince George who supported the bid through ticket pre-purchases. We are indebted to the City of Prince George for their continued support of our efforts to bring the Royal Bank Cup to Prince George,” says Rogers.
Prince George Spruce Kings President Rick Turgeon, congratulates the bid committee for their successful efforts and says hosting this prestigious event means a great deal to the team. “Everyone in the Spruce Kings organization is committed to putting forward a competitive host team in 2007, and we have already taken strides to build that team.” As the host team, the Prince George Spruce Kings are guaranteed a spot in the 2007 National Championships.
The 2007 RBC Royal Bank Cup is scheduled for Prince George May 5-13, 2007 at the CN Centre. Those that put down a deposit to support the bid will get first choice of seating. Tickets will likely go on sale to the general public in the fall of 2006.
