CALGARY, AB – The Streetsville Derbys will welcome the nations best Junior ‘A’ teams when they host the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup, Canada’s National Junior ‘A’  Hockey Championship May 6-14, 2006.

The host organizing committee is encouraged by the community and corporate support thus far and is excited that the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup also coincides with the Mississauga Hockey League’s 60th anniversary.  As a result, all of its members, (approximately 7, 000 minor hockey players in Mississauga) have been provided with tickets to the event.
“Thanks to the support and commitment of our long time premier sponsor, RBC Royal Bank, and the passion of the host committee and volunteers, this event continues to gain momentum every year and is the pinnacle of junior A hockey in Canada” said Bob Nicholson, President, Hockey Canada.

Ontario last hosted Canada’s National Junior ‘A’ Championship in 1995, back when it was named the Centennial Cup.

Even though general tickets sales have not yet been made available to the general public, special ticket initiatives have already been a huge success.  Through various corporate partnerships, approximately 24,000 tickets to the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup have been reserved thus far.  Most of these tickets will be provided to schools and youth groups in the area so that they can attend the games.  Both the Peel District School Board and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board are in support of this initiative and both host cities (Mississauga and Brampton) have partnered to provide transportation services with this unique school program.

On , the Organizing Committee will kick off its next ticket phase by offering all minor hockey teams in the area an opportunity to purchase tickets through their local Minor Hockey Associations.  Tickets for the general public will go on sale beginning with a single game ticket costing $25.00.  More details regarding ticket prices and tournament passes will follow at www.hockeycanada.ca.
“The Streetsville Derbys hockey club and its staff will ensure that this national championship continues the tradition and success set forth by previous host committees” said Randy Gumbley Chair of the Host Committee.  “The Streetsville Derbys are dedicated to promoting the passion of hockey and are committed to developing grass roots hockey in the local community.  In doing so, every young player in the Mississauga Hockey Association will receive a ticket to a RBC Royal Bank Cup game as we want our youth to share in this once in a lifetime experience”.

As part of the events surrounding the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup, there will be a two day sports medicine symposium at the Host Hotel, the Delta Meadowvale Resort and Conference Centre on May 10 –. Organized by Doctor Erin Boynton, surgeon for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Blue Jays, it will be open to area trainers and therapists and will feature leading professionals on the topics of nutrition, common injuries and their prevention, concussions and rehabilitation.  At the Brampton Sports and Entertainment Centre, a carnival will be established featuring rides, an attempt to break the Guinness Book of Records for the longest softball game, a family BBQ, and live entertainment in the evenings.

The tournament opens May 6th with a five team round-robin, with the top four teams qualifying for the playoff round. The round-robin is followed by two semi-final games (first against fourth and second against third). The Gold medal game will be played on Sunday, , and will be broadcast on TSN/RDS, the official broadcaster of Hockey Canada.

Notable alumni who have played in previous RBC Royal Bank Cups (Centennial Cups) include Rod Brind’Amour (Carolina Hurricanes), Scott Gomez (New Jersey Devils), Greg Johnson (Nashville Predators), and Curtis Joseph (Phoenix Coyotes).
