Calgary Oval X-Treme Win NWHL Title
BRAMPTON, Ont.-- The Calgary X-Treme defeated the Brampton Thunder 6-5 in a shootout on Saturday to win the National Women's Hockey League championship for the second straight year. Numerous Team Canada women's players played at this NWHL event.
Kelly Bechard of Sedley, Sask., was the only player to tally in the shootout after a scoreless 10-minute overtime period.
Brampton's Jayna Hefford of Kingston, Ont., was named most valuable player. Hefford and Bechard were teammates just days earlier when Canada won its eighth straight title with a 2-0 victory over the U.S. at the women's world hockey championships in Halifax.
The Thunder forced extra time when Kathleen Kauth -- a forward for the U.S. at the world championships -- scored late in the third period.
