Hockey Alberta once again has two club teams competing for the chance to attend the Esso Women’s Nationals. The Edmonton Chimos and the Calgary Oval Extreme. The Extreme are the defending Esso Women’s National’s Champions, having won the event last year in Saskatoon.

The teams will compete in a best of three Provincial Championship to determine the right to attend the National Championship in Sherwood Park. Several bids are in to host the Provincial Championship. This will be awarded to a Host site in early January.
Both of the teams play in the Western Division of the NWHL. To date the teams have completed half of their 12 game Schedule against each other. The Oval leads the series with 5 wins and 1 loss.

The X-Treme traveled to Toronto in October and won all 3 exhibition games - 2 against the Brampton Thunder and 1 against the Toronto Aeros. They will travel once more to Toronto in January to play 2 games against the Aeros and 1 against Brampton. Brampton will return the trip to the Oval X-Treme in January while the Toronto Aeros will visit in February.

In December the Oval X-Treme signed Hayley Wickenheiser as she returned to Canada and female hockey. This marks Hayley’s return to the Oval Program. In 1995, she was one of the first athletes to join the Program and spent five years training at the Oval. Also joining the staff as Associate coach is Tim Bothwell. Tim previously was with the Atlanta Thrashers in the NHL and U of C Dino Men’s Team.
