SHAFTESBURY ADVANCES TO SEMIFINALS AFTER SHUTOUT WIN OVER ROTHESAY

by Tyson Giuriato

WINNIPEG, Man. – Larissa Martyniuk (Winnipeg, Man.) and Rikki Meilleur (St. Adolphe, Man.) both had a goal and an assist, while Tiana Charban (Winnipeg, Man.) made 12 saves for the shutout on top of adding an assist, as Shaftesbury Hockey Academy cruised past Rothesay Netherwood School to a 5-0 win on Friday at the 2013 Female World Sport School Challenge.

Kayla Mee (Stonewall, Man.), Eastyn Yuen (Winnipeg, Man.) and Kayla Karbonik (St. Andrews, Man.) also lit the lamp for Shaftesbury, which finishes the preliminary round with a record of 2-1.

Mee opened the scoring just 1:34 into the game and Yuen found the back of the net less than six minutes later to give Shaftesbury a 2-0 lead seven minutes into the game. Karbonik and Meilleur added singles later in the frame to extend Shaftesbury’s lead to 4-0 after 20 minutes.

Rothesay goaltender Marlene Boissonnault (Dundee, N.B.), was sensational in the middle stanza and single-handily shut down the potent Shaftesbury attack, stopping all 20 shots fired her way in a scoreless second period.

Martyniuk added to the Shaftesbury lead 5:29 into the third period, the lone goal of the frame, making it a 5-0 final.

Justine Fredette (Winnipeg, Man.) added two helpers for Shaftesbury, who outshout Rothesay 60-12 in the game. Boissonault made a remarkable 55 saves in the loss for Rothesay.

Shaftesbury Hockey Academy will face off against the Okanagan Hockey Academy in a semifinal showdown on Saturday at 1:45 p.m. CT, while Rothesay Netherwood will play in the fifth place game against St. Mary’s Academy at 11 a.m. CT Saturday morning.
