HEFFERNAN, VILGRAIN BOTH HAVE HAT TRICKS AS EDGE ROMPS FORT FRANCES

WINNIPEG, Man. – Karly Heffernan (St. Albert, Alta.) and Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.) both had hat tricks, while Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta.) and Kate Hufnagel (Cochrane, Alta.) both picked up two goals and an assist, as Edge School for Athletes powered past Fort Frances High School 14-3 on Friday at the 2013 Female World Sport School Challenge.

Cassidy Fuller (Calgary, Alta.), Emily Power (Airdrie, Alta.) and Celine van der Molen (Cochrane, Alta.) each had a goal and an assist, while Codie Cross (Airdire, Alta.) also found the back of the net for the Edge.

The Edge players came storming out of the gates, outshooting Fort Frances by a count of 23-7 en route to scoring four times in the opening frame, as Cross, Vilgrain, Murray and van der Molen all tallied first period goals to give Edge a 4-0 lead after 20 minutes.

And they didn’t let up in the second period, outshooting Fort Frances 21-7, while scoring six times. Vilgrain scored her second of the game just 1:40 into the frame, while Heffernan scored three times and Hufnagel found the back of the net twice for Edge. Shelby Tymkin (Fort Frances, Ont.) scored twice in the period for Fort Frances, who trailed 10-2 heading into the third period.

Fuller, Power and Murray all added goals in the third period, along with Vilgrain, who scored her third of the game, while Amber Jourdain (Fort Frances, Ont.) found the back of the net for Fort Frances, making it a 14-3 final.

Emily Monaghan (Calgary, Alta.) grabbed three assists, while Alex Serpico (Calgary, Alta.), Danelle Bishoff (Calgary, Alta.) and Caitlin Fyten (Sundre, Alta.) each registered two helpers for Edge, who outshot Fort Frances 56-20 in the game.

The Edge School for Athletes will face the Pursuit of Excellence Hockey Academy in a semifinal match-up Saturday at 2 p.m. CT, while Fort Frances High School will square off with the Banff Hockey Academy in the seventh place game Saturday at 10:45 a.m. CT.
