KRZYSZCZYK SCORES GAME-WINNER TO GIVE MANITOBA SPOT IN SEMIS

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Danielle Krzyszczyk (Winnipeg, Man.) stepped onto the ice in the third, got a hold of the puck at 57 seconds into the period, skated speedily toward the Quebec net and scored a beauty goal Friday morning to score the game-winning goal to make it 3-2 over Quebec and secure Manitoba a spot in semifinals at the 2012 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

The Manitoba bench erupted in cheers when the red light went off and the music blared over the loud speakers, and the players knew they would just have to hold off Quebec for another 19 minutes to make it another step closer to gold in Dawson Creek.

But it was Quebec to kick off the scoring early in the game, with team captain Catherine Dubois (Quebec City, Que.) leading the way as soon as the puck dropped, putting the puck past the Manitoba goal line at just 59 seconds into the game to make it 1-0. But a penalty cost Quebec the lead later in the period, with Haley Studler (Gross Isle, Man.) evening the score at a 14:49 on the power-play, with help from Halli Krzyzaniak (Neepawa, Ont.). Although competing against each other on the ice at under-18 nationals this week, Dubois and Krzyzaniak were teammates when Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team to won the gold medal at the 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women’s World Championship in Prerov and Zlin, Czech Republic, in January.

With the score tied up at one-apiece, both Manitoba and Quebec continued to put everything they had on the ice, and it was back-and-forth action throughout the second. But it was Manitoba’s Studler to step up once again on a power-play, putting the puck into the back of the Quebec net at 3:52 in the period. It was then Manitoba’s turned to get sent to the box, and Elizabeth Giguère was able to even it up again at two-apiece at 7:09 in the middle frame.

The two provincial teams came out of the doors flying the third, both determined to come out on top and earned that much sought after spot in semifinals, but Krzyszczyk immediately took possession of the puck and made it all about Manitoba when she scored her pretty goal in the first minute of the period. Quebec’s players skated their hearts out in hopes of trying it up again, but there just simply wasn’t enough time on the clock, and Manitoba took the 3-2 game and the advancement at nationals in what was an emotional end to an exciting game.

Both teams will hit the ice again Saturday in the next steps toward determined final placement at this national championship. Check out www.HockeyCanada.ca/NWU18C for the latest stories, stats and summaries straight from Dawson Creek.
