OSWALD SCORES GAME-WINNER FOR MANITOBA IN EXCITING MATCH-UP AGAINST ONTARIO BLUE

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – Courtlyn Oswald (MacGregor, Man.) sent the Manitoba bench into happy hysterics Thursday when she put the past puck the Ontario Blue line for the game-winning goal that gave her team its first win at the 2012 National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Oswald notched the nice-looking marker at 8:20 in the third period, on assists from Stephanie Grossi (Winnipeg, Man.) and Madison Hutchinson (Manitou, Man.). But it really could have been either province’s game in what was a back-and-forth, fast-paced and competitive game that kept fans inside the EnCana Events Centre more than entertained during Game 2 of Day 2 at this year’s national championship in Dawson Creek.

Manitoba also jump-started the scoring in the first period, with Nicole Carswell (Winnipeg, Man.) taking a pass from Haley Studler (Grosse Isle, Man.) at the 6:48 mark to put the goal past the Ontario Blue line, and put her team up on the  scoreboard.

Ontario Blue was fired up after its 3-1 win over Saskatchewan on opening day, though, and demonstrated their determination to secure another ‘W’ by not letting a goal against deter them, and forward Kristen Miller (Oakville, Ont.) was able to get her team on the score sheet late in the second with a little help with Taylor Accursi (Ancaster, Ont.) and Jessica Gillham (Uxbridge, Ont.).

Both teams stepped it up a notch on the ice moving into the third, with spectators in the stands watching in anticipation to see which team would break the tie, and ultimately claim the win, and three points in national championship standings. In the end, Manitoba claimed the game.

Manitoba next faces off Friday morning at 10 a.m. against Quebec, while Ontario Blue takes on Alberta at 1 p.m. on Day 3. Get the latest game stories, summaries and stats at HockeyCanada.ca/NWU18C.
