SAGUENAY, Que. – Kimberly Newell (Burnaby, B.C.) was the story on Saturday afternoon, turning aside all 40 shots she faced for the shutout as British Columbia earned fifth place at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship with a 4-0 win over Ontario Blue.

B.C. opened the scoring at the 6:41 mark off the stick of Stephanie Schaupmeyer (Kelowna, B.C.), who put her own rebound behind Ontario Blue goaltender Kayla Black (Blyth, Ont.). The goal was Schaupmeyer’s tournament-leading fourth in as many games.

In the middle frame, British Columbia doubled its lead with a power play goal from Aimee DiBella (Nelson, B.C.), sending the west coast side to the dressing room with a two-goal lead through 40 minutes. Ontario Blue was at its best in the second period, outshooting B.C. 20-8, but Newell was brilliant, stopping everything thrown her way.

B.C. pulled away in the third, with goals coming from Reaghan Chadwick (Port Coquitlam, B.C.), Brittany Berisoff (Kelowna, B.C.) and Lauren Spring (Kelowna, B.C.) to clinch the province’s best finish at the tournament since winning bronze at the January 2005 on home ice in Salmon Arm, B.C.
