The mood was electric inside the Georges-Vezina Centre Wednesday morning for the first game of the National Women's Under-18 Championship. With smiles on their faces, players from Alberta and British Columbia stepped onto the ice ready to go for gold! British Columbia won its first game 2-1.

Alberta dominated the first period with nine shots on goal against four. B.C. goaltender Cassidy Hendricks (North Vancouver, B.C.), was impressive, making many key saves and keeping her team in the game. She was rewarded by being named player of the game.

Daley Oddy (Cranbrook, B.C.) opened the scoring for British Columbia against goaltender Robyn Chemago (Slave Lake, Alta.). Her goal seemed to energize her team and inspire her teammate Stephanie Schaupmeyer (Kelowna, B.C.), who doubled B.C.'s lead towards the end of the period.

Alberta's goaltender Robyn Chemago (Slave Lake, Alta.) made several spectacular saves, stopping 14 shots. While she was on the bench after being replaced by a sixth skater, Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta.) cut B.C.'s lead to one, but it was not enough despite a valiant effort.

Alberta plays again at 10 a.m. Thursday, this time against Manitoba, while British Columbia next faces defending gold medallists Ontario Red at 5 p.m. ET. Catch the action live at www.hockeycanada.fasthockey.com
