LEVEILLE GETS SHUTOUT, KOHLER SCORES GOAL AS ONTARIO RED STAYS PERFECT

SAGUENAY, Que. – Amanda Leveille (Kingston, Ont.) made 22 saves and Rebecca Kohler (St. Thomas, Ont.) scored the game’s only goal late in the first period as Ontario Red wrapped up a perfect preliminary round at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship with a 1-0 win over Alberta on Friday night.

Even though it was assured of finishing atop Group A, Ontario Red came out ready for an Alberta team that desperately needed a win to keep its final four hopes alive.

Kohler got the goal scoring started for Ontario Red, beating Alberta netminder Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruderheim, Alta.) on a power play and giving the six-time defending champions a lead after a first period in which it outshot Alberta 10-6.

The second and third periods belonged to the women behind the masks. Ontario Red enjoyed four power plays but was unable to increase its lead against Maschmeyer, who made 29 saves overall. Leveille was also strong, making nine of her 22 saves in the third period.

Ontario Red will wait until Friday’s preliminary finale between Quebec and Saskatchewan wraps up to find out who and when it will play in Saturday’s semifinals, while Alberta will take part in the seventh-place game at 10 a.m.
