WHITE SWEEPS THREE-GAME INTERSQUAD SLEDGE SERIES
CFB Petawawa, Ont. – The White jerseys came out as the winners following this weekend’s selection camp for Canada’s National Sledge Team, with the team topping the Red jerseys three times in two days during intersquad action at Silver Dart Arena.
The puck dropped on the first matchup at 9:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, with Erik Desjardins (Laval, Que.) and Brendan Blanchard (Chatham, Ont.) both contributing a couple of goals for white and Billy Bridges (Summerside, P.E.I.) scoring one of his own for White’s five goals of the game. Dominic Larocque (Quebec City, Que.) scored both of Red’s goals for the final tally of 5-2.
Both teams were back on the ice for Game 2 at 5 p.m. ET on Saturday, and this time around Red did a better job of holding White off in the offensive end, but still wasn’t able to get on the scoreboard over three periods of play. Anthony Gale (Brampton, Ont.) scored White’s sole goal of the game, which was just enough to give his team its second win of the day, with a final 1-0 score.
The third and final game of Red-White intersquad action kicked off at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday. National Sledge Team veterans Billy Bridges and Bradley Bowden (Orton, Ont.) led White to its 3-2 win, with Bridges contributing a single goal and Bowden putting two of his own on the scoresheet. Fellow veteran Greg Westlake (Oakville, Ont.) had both of Red’s markers to keep the game close.
The final roster for Canada’s 2010-11 National Sledge Team was decided Sunday. This season the team will complete in several international events, including a three-game series against the United States in Toronto, Ont. this October and a second series against the United States in Rochester, N.Y. this November. The Canadian contingent will also compete in a 4 Nations tournament in Japan next February and at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, which will be held next spring in a Canadian city that is yet to be determined.
