QUEBEC HOLDS OFF LATE SLOVAK CHARGE

REGINA — Quebec faced a late challenge, but managed defeat Slovakia 4-3 in Balgonie Friday at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Slovakia’s Marek Baiz, Milan Kytnar made it a 4-2 game. Matej Misura added a power-play goal with 19 seconds left in the game, but the Slovaks could not complete the comeback.

Angelo Esposito opened the scoring late in the opening period with his second shorthanded goal of the tournament. Michael Stinziani assisted at the 16:15 mark.

Esposito added a power-play goal in the second period, as Quebec padded its lead to 4-0.

Other goals came from Kevin Marshall and Maxime Cliché.

For the second-straight game, Quebec’s goaltender picked up a player of the game honour. Friday, it went to Nicola Riopel. Slovakia’s award also went to a goaltender, Zdenko Kotvan

Quebec plays Team West Saturday in Moose Jaw at 5 p.m. Slovakia meets the United States Saturday in Milestone, also at 5 p.m.
