2006 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

Ontario 5 – Quebec 6

QUEBEC WITHSTANDS COUTURE - TAVARES ATTACK

By Keith Borkowsky

REGINA — Team Quebec appeared to have locked up a lopsided win over Ontario at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. While Quebec’s 6-5 win Thursday gives them a round-robin edge, Ontario’s repeated comeback attempts made the game more of a Wild-West standoff in Moose Jaw.

Ontario’s Logan Couture led the comeback with the tournament’s second hat trick. John Tavares added three assists. But, Quebec’s Olivier Fortier finally iced the win with 3:12 left in the game.

Quebec opened up a 4-0 lead halfway through the contest on goals from Mathieu Tousignant, Michael Stinziani, Angelo Esposito (shorthanded) and Marc-Andre Laroche. Tousignant also added an assist on Laroche’s goal for his second point.

That’s where Ontario stepped up to launch a comeback bid. Couture scored back-to-back goals (once on a power-play) while Sam Gagner chipped in a single, all in the second half of the middle period.

Quebec goalie Raffael D’Orso’s strong effort was key in giving his team the win.

Quebec meets Slovakia in Balgonie on Friday at 7 p.m. Ontario plays the United States in Moose Jaw in another 7 p.m. contest.
