FOUR POINTS EACH FOR TANUS AND KURONEN, FINLAND TO PLAY FOR WSSC GOLD

CALGARY, Alta. – Jonatan Tanus and Jimi Kuronen finished with four points apiece and Finland’s power play scored six times as the Scandinavians continued their offensive roll and booked a spot in the inaugural World Sport School Challenge gold medal game with a 13-2 semifinal rout of the Edge School on Friday night.

Finland will face Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Saturday’s gold medal game (3 p.m. MT) in a rematch of arguably the best game of the tournament thus far – the Finns’ 4-3 victory over the Sabres in the final preliminary round game for both on Wednesday night.

The Finns jumped all over the Edge School early and often Friday, taking a 5-0 lead after one period thanks to goals from five different players – Tanus, Artturi Lehkonen, Aleksi Mustonen, Saku Kinnunen and Aleksi Ainali – and outshooting the Canadian side 19-7 in the opening 20 minutes.

The Edge School came out physical to start the second period, pounding the Finns at every opportunity, and was rewarded at 10:06 when Scott Salberg put the Mountaineers on the board. But the excitement was short-lived, as the Finns scored three times in just over four minutes before Brandon Hodge scored in the dying seconds of the period to make it an 8-2 game after two.

Finland’s power play came alive in the third period, converting on all four of their chances to help reach double digits for the second time in four games. Kuronen scored a natural hat trick in the final frame, netting three goals in 7:38.

With the loss, the Edge School will play in Saturday’s bronze medal game, taking on Slovakia (noon MT).
