2013 TELUS Cup

Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal 4 - Ottawa Jr. 67's 3

GERMAIN SCORES TWO, ROUSSEAU ROYAL COME BACK FOR WIN OVER JR. 67’S

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – Marc-Antoine Germain scored twice, including the game-winning goal with 9:26 to go, as the Rousseau Royal de Laval-Montréal won its third in a row at the 2013 TELUS Cup, beating the Ottawa Jr. 67’s 4-3 on Thursday afternoon.

The victory moves the Rousseau Royal into sole possession of first place, leapfrogging the Red Deer Chiefs, who won earlier Thursday, but the Quebec champions could be joined by the Sault Ste. Marie North Stars if the hosts beat Saskatoon in the Thursday finale.

Massimo Carozza and Jean-Christophe Bergeron had the other goals for Laval-Montréal (3-1), which trailed 3-2 entering the third period before coming back to win.

Germain was the lone Laval-Montréal skater to record multiple points. In all, 11 players had at least a point.

Geoff Hiebert, Matthew Hudson and Elias Rizk scored for Ottawa (2-2), which led after two periods despite being outshot 25-8 through 40 minutes.

Hiebert opened the scoring for Ottawa 4:50 in with a deft redirection of a Ryan Kuffner shot, but Carozza tied it for Laval-Montréal before the end of the first period when his centering pass hit Jr. 67’s defenceman Daniel Laframboise and eluded goaltender Michael Cullen.

The teams traded goals early in the second period – Germain for Laval-Montréal, Hudson for Ottawa – before Rizk gave the Central Region champions the lead heading to the second intermission, picking up a loose puck in the Rousseau Royal zone and snapping a shot short-side over the glove of Alexandre Duckett.

Laval-Montréal got a break on the tying goal 3:48 into the third period – a dump-in from Jason Bell took a funny bounce off the corner boards and into the slot, where Bergeron knocked it past Cullen for the 3-3 goal.

Germain completed the comeback seven minutes later, going to the backhand on a breakaway and beating Cullen through the five-hole for the game-winner.

Duckett picked up the win in the Laval-Montréal goal, making 12 saves, while Cullen took the loss in his first start of the tournament, finishing with 25 stops.

Laval-Montréal will try to make it four wins in a row when they take on the host Sault Ste. Marie North Stars in Friday’s preliminary round finale (4:30 p.m. ET), while Ottawa will look to secure a semifinal spot  when it faces the Red Deer Chiefs in the day’s early game (9:30 a.m. ET)
