JOHNSON SCORES TWICE, FLYERS EARN FIRST WIN BY BEATING WOLVES

LEDUC, Alta. – Stephen Johnson scored twice to break open a scoreless tie in the second period and help the Moncton Flyers score their first win of the 2012 TELUS Cup, 3-2 over the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves on Thursday afternoon.

The victory keeps the Flyers’ slim semifinal hopes alive, and ensures they won’t be the first Atlantic champions to go winless at the National Midget Championship since St. John’s in 2001.

Samuel LeBlanc scored the other goal for Moncton (1-3), which outshot Sudbury 21-5 in the decisive second period, when it scored all of its goals. The Flyers held a 42-24 advantage in shots for the game.

For Moncton to reach the weekend, it needs a Leduc win over Saskatoon on Thursday night or a tie in that game, and the Flyers have to beat the Contacts in Friday’s final preliminary round game (1 p.m. MT).

Ryan Erickson and Connor Burgess scored power play goals in the third period for Sudbury (0-4), which will miss out on the semifinals for the first time in five all-time trips to the national championship; it had appeared in the gold medal game in its last two appearances, winning it all in 2008.

The Wolves close out their tournament on Friday morning when they take on the Red Deer Rebels (9:30 a.m. MT).
