PAULS RACKS UP FIVE POINTS, LEADS HOUNDS TO WIN

SELKIRK, Man. – Three goals and an assist would be a great game for anyone, especially at a national championship against the best teams in the country.

Jesse Pauls did it in 17 minutes and 21 seconds.

The Notre Dame defenceman scored three times – all on the power play – and added a helper, all before the 18-minute mark of the first period, and notched his fourth goal in the game in the third, leading the Hounds to an 11-3 win over the Moncton Flyers on Wednesday at the 2009 TELUS Cup.

Lucas Froese added two goals and two assists and Brent Benson had three assists, while Trevor Cameron, Francis Menard, with two, Zach Hodder and Ben Gamache also put their names on the scoresheet for Notre Dame (2-0-1).

Overall, eight players recorded at least two points for the Hounds, who ran the West Region’s round-robin unbeaten streak to 26 games, dating back to the 2004 National Midget Championship, and became the first team to hit double digits at the national championship since Red Deer rounded St. John’s 10-0 in 2007.

Tyrone Sock opened the scoring on a Moncton man advantage in the first period and scored again on the power play early in the second, and Joslin Gallant scored with the Flyers a man up in the final 20 minutes. At 0-3, the Atlantic Region representatives are seeing their semifinal hopes disappearing with just two games remaining.
