THRASHERS STAY PERFECT WITH WIN OVER MCCAINS

Just as it was one day earlier in their win over Séminaire Saint-François, it was the special teams that led the Winnipeg Thrashers to victory on Wednesday.

The West Region champions scored three times on the powerplay and once shorthanded as they improved to a perfect 3-0 at the 2008 TELUS Cup with a 4-3 win over the Cole Harbour McCains.

Player of the game Mark Stone and Jesse Hall led the charge with two goals and two assists for the Thrashers, who clicked for four goals on the man advantage against the Blizzard on Tuesday.

The Thrashers, just as they did in Tuesday’s game, clicked in the opening three minutes, as Hall picked up the loose puck after a Stone shot and deposited it behind Cole Harbour McCains netminder Kody Blois.

The Atlantic Region representatives answered right back, however, as Theodore Hannah beat Winnipeg goaltender Joey Rewucki just 1:52 after Hall’s goal to pull the McCains even at 1-1.

Just 3:43 after that it was the McCains again who struck, as Cole Harbour player of the game Stuart Lenehan beat Rewucki through the legs from the point on a powerplay, giving Cole Harbour a somewhat surprising 2-1 lead.

Stone, Hall and the Winnipeg special teams took over in the late going of the opening period, as Stone scored once on the man advantage and once shorthanded 4:27 apart before the first intermission.

After being outshot 14-7 in the opening 20 minutes, the McCains held a 7-6 advantage in period two, but could not get a shot past Brett Martyniuk, who replaced Rewucki after the first period.

The Thrashers had the only goal of the second period, as Hall and Stone combined once again on the powerplay, sending Winnipeg to the second intermission with a 4-2 lead.

Needing a fast start to get back into the game, Cole Harbour got a quick goal from Stephen MacAuley just 5:09 into the final frame, but could not muster anymore offence, managing just six shots over the final 20 minutes.

The Thrashers will look to remain perfect on Thursday when they face the host Ottawa Valley Titans at 7:30 p.m. ET, while the McCains will look to break into the win column against the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves at 12:00 p.m. ET.
